
This was an attempt to portray a stunning light effect shortly after dawn at Strand on the Green near Kew Bridge on the River Thames. Even squinting it was hard to see the group of boats and the island on the right as anything but dark masses and I was glad of my trusty broad brimmed hat to at least let me see my panel. I used a very limited palette of raw umber, cadmium yellow light, french ultramarine blue and cadmium red plus quick drying white and the sketch was completed in under half an hour
